It uses the same IR touch the Sony and Kobo use.

They did indeed specify IR touch screen at the press conference, according to the blog. I though the mentioned the company, too... Neo-something?

Unanswered questions for me:
PDF support? With reflow at least as good as Sony?
Wifi usable for Internet access, downloading or sideloading?

***New Nook starts shipping June 10th, available for pre-order now.

*B&N is looking into international opportunities ("lots of interest from folks abroad for their devices") but nothing to announce today.

*Touchscreen, as expected, uses Neonode infrared technology. Same technology is in Sony Readers and new Kobo.

*Device runs on Android 2.1.

*New feature: FastPage allows you to zoom forward in book.

*Next month launching MyNook, site for sharing with friends.

*Built-in WiFi, no 3G.

*Shopping experience has been upgraded on device.

*6 different fonts, 7 different sizes.

*Original Nook pricing is now $119 and $169 (for 3G version) until supplies last.

New Nook, 6-inch Pearl e-ink touch-screen, 7.5 ounces, battery life up to 2 months, built-in Wi-Fi (no 3G), $139, available June 10.

Their biggest innovation is one Sony fails to grasp - reasonable pricing.

Who is this Sony of which you speak? Wait, you mean THAT Sony? I haven't heard anything from them in ages, how have they been doing lately?

Sony has been leaders of innovation in the world of electronics for a long time, but they have a habit of mis-reading the market and what it will bear and wind up on the losing end of a lot of battles.

"has-been" might be precisely the correct phrase in Sony's case.
Back in the "Sony, no baloney" days, I was a big fan of their stuff, even when they backed the wrong horse (in hindsight, betamax, minidisk, etc) but lately, except for the ereaders, their consumer products have been pretty much the same disposable garbage as everyone else's.
The ereaders are expensive, but they do seem well made, like Sony of old.

The new Nook is $40 cheaper than the Sony Pocket with a bigger screen. The Sony does not even have Wi-Fi. Even the Sony Touch is $90 more expensive and still does not have Wi-Fi. You have to go up to the Daily Edition model in order to get Wi-Fi and 3G for $300.

Sony needs to rework pricing. I think the Sony readers are well built but the price is just terrible and the Sony book store isn't a lot better.

The Nook's 2 months of battery life is calculated on using the device for 30 minutes a day with wifi turned off. I don't know how Kobo calculates its 10 days.

the sony pocket goes on sale regularly for 119 or 129. It's smaller, but also looks very nice with the aluminum case instead of plastic.

I'll bet the blogger is right and amazon will drop the keyboard and add touch to the next kindle. That will leave all the major players offering nearly identical devices.

man I hope not because I swear - I am touch screen challenged. They never do what I want them to do.

Looking closely at the new nook, I can't see any page turn buttons on the side. Is it purely touchscreen with no other page turn option?

and they are still living in the 80's and 90's where people bought products simply because they were a Sony, those days are long gone and the higer ups haven't seem to have gotten the memo.

It's Neonode's IR, the same as in the Sony models and in the new Kobo.
