Academic needs advice

Hello

I know that you guys must receive these types of request all the time but I feel a but lost and I just wonder if you could assist me in some issues.

As an academic, I have to read lots of information. The majority of that information comes nowadays in PDF format: its either articles downloaded from JSTOR or other databases or books that are scanned in some libraries (two pages per A4 face-sheet) and sent to the researcher for academic purposes.

Since printing is expensive, non-ecological and obliges us to carry heavyweights around, I was inquiring to purchase an e-reader device that could assist me in doing all this reading. The device in question must have the following characteristics:

(a) it must be mac compatible (I know that there are 3rd party applications to go around this issue but nonetheless it must work with a mac).

(b) it must handle PDF well. When I mean PDF, I mean many scanned books (two pages per sheet). Therefore it must equally have zooming and scrolling capabilities.

(c) preferably it would allow me to make annotations and save them as a separate file.

Which one would you suggest?

The iRex DR1000 is probably your best bet, currently.

Your requirements seem to differ a little from those mentioned in the thread Harry linked, so I'll just throw in a few comments:
If I understand correctly, you want to be able to read PDFs containing two scanned pages per A4 page? Doing this on any 6 inch device is going to be a pain in the ass, even with decent scrolling and zooming implemented (which you shouldn't take for granted). If you have the bucks, go with the iRex. If you don't, before you go out and buy a smaller device, research into converting your PDFs so that each page only contains one scanned page. That way, your files should be readable even on a smaller screen device.
As for annotations, you'll only really get them on the iRex, as far as I know. Don't get your hopes up on that one.
