Not really. A reason, yes, the most visible lobbyist, yes, but hardly the only one.

No. Corporate copyright are 95 years from first publication or 120 years from creation. There is no "life plus" involved, no variables. (This is for works created or published prior to 1978. For works created or published prior to 1978, it's a bit more complicated, but the executive summary is that 95/120 are the maximum copyright terms. All works published in the US prior to January 1, 1923 are public domain. Works published after that are only in the public domain if their copyright expired without renewal.)

Let me guess: J.D. Salinger won't be appearing in their archives any time soon.

Why do you have to "guess"? You can work it out for yourself. Mr Salinger died in 2010. The US is now a country with a life+70 copyright law, so, just as in most other countries, his works will enter the US public domain on 1st Jan 2081.

'Probably not in the lifetime of anyone reading this post' counts as not any time soon!

Drat. Thanks for the correction . That's not nearly as bad then: "The Catcher in the Rye" should enter the US public domain in 2046, if I've done my sums right.

Woohoo! I'll only be a little bit dead then, instead of really, really dead!

I would only agree that was fair if Disney donates all the money it's made off of public domain works to the EFF or the Library of Congress. Which would be nearly all of it. Why should a corporation that made its pile o' money FROM the public domain be exempt from contributing TO the public domain? |
