"Stop and go"? How can you judge what is happening around your when your nose is in a book? Forget your "catharsis". Pay attention to what you are doing! |

Your caricature of a high school driving instructor is quite funny.

We need one law, "Driving While Distracted." It would cover cell phone use, texting, reading, doing one's hair, shaving...whatever distracts a person from watching the road, the traffic, pedestrians, traffic signs, and all the other stuff that goes into driving responsibly.
And yes, I'm a cranky old fart. I'd go on at length about the way people drive, but there's a bunch of kids cutting across my lawn. "Hey...you kids! Yeah, I'm talkin' to you..!" |

Excuse me, but I hardly think expecting people to pay attention while they drive makes them "cranky old farts".
Yelling at the kids crossing your lawn might........durn young whippersnappers! |

It's not a lack of common sense to not raise a pitchfork and cry out "string 'em up!" to a video of a semi-competent driver doing a mildly "distracting" activity under conditions which do not demand extreme vigilance. Perhaps he continued his reading into areas or driving conditions which do require a higher degree of active attention, but the video did not show that.
As I said, I wouldn't recommend such behavior, particularly as it was against company policy, but your demonizing is excessive and unnecessary. |

A time when someone else isn't driving defensively.....looking out for HIM when HE should be paying attention to whats going on around him. "Demonizing"? Firing him is appropriate. Making excuses for his unacceptable behavior is enabling him to continue on his merry way......and by the way......did you even watch the video? I don't see any "stop and go"......cars are definitely moving. The tape clearly states "In the middle of rush hour traffic". |

My husband has a CDL, and not getting distracted while driving is IMPERATIVE. There are rules for people who have Commercial Driver's Licenses (CDLs), and they are above and beyond regular drivers have.
Yes, you might think the traffic is stop and go and it is safe to read while stopped, but that still takes your mind off of your main job, getting your passengers SAFELY to their destination. What happens if the person slams their brakes on unexpectedly? The same is true if the traffic is moving extremely slowly. Unless you are watching you never know what the people around you are doing. This guy wasn't on a break, he was actively involved in what he was being paid to do, or was supposed to be actively involved. Technically he was stealing from his company by reading while getting paid to drive. Would you want your surgeon reading during surgery, just because there was a few seconds that he had to wait on someone else to do something, like retract something? Same thing, lives are in their hands. |
