I found Peter Watts 'Rifter' trilogy to be horrifying and disturbing, while probably just classified as SF. Very dystopian near-end-of-world stuff.

While I hear the movie sucks, I thought The Ruins was pretty good. Scott Smith. Though no zombies or Apocalypse.

I'm surprised no one has yet recommended Edgar Allen Poe. The absolute classic in horror stories. H.P. Lovecraft isn't bad either.

And as Scott so kindly gave me a name check, it would be churlish not to return the favour...

Seek out Scott's stuff folks. You won't be disappointed. He's the real deal.

Stephen King's "Misery" is a really memorable horror tale. A fast read.

And as others have mentioned, SK's The Stand, and Dark Tower Series are also really good.

Just thought of another one. The Monstrumologist. This seems to be a new version of it because I left a review on the version I read and that page is missing.
