Global Android Tablet Market Shares - Kindle is big winner

Quote:

Kindle Fire nabs 33% of Android tablet market, Nexus 7 just 8%
We loved Google's 7-inch tablet, but it lacks Amazon's official backing.

by Casey Johnston - Jan 28 2013, 9:44am MST

The Kindle Fire overwhelmingly dominates the Android tablet scene, while Google’s own Nexus 7 finishes a distant fourth, according to data from app analytics company Localytics. While the company couldn’t offer raw data or comparative figures with Apple’s tablets, it does point out that the US has the majority share of Android tablets at 59 percent, and Great Britain has the next largest share at five percent.

Android tablet manufacturers continue to be cagey about sales figures, save a trickle here or there: David Chang, CFO of Asus, stated Google had sold around three million Nexus 7 units between the device’s launch in July and the end of October; Amazon did not trumpet sales of its Kindle Fire for the 2012 holiday season as it did in 2011, when around three million units sold in the month of December alone. By contrast, Apple sold 22.9 million iPads in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Because Localytics uses app installations as a proxy to estimate market shares, its numbers aren’t perfect, though it boasts a large sample size (500 million unique devices).
This can't be only tablets. I'm not even sure if it can be tablets+smartphones, since the company doesn't have "comparative figures with Apple’s tablets".

Those are total installed base numbers, BTW. Not quarterly sales.
So some Kindle advantage over Nexus is to be expected; they have a 6 month lead.
And the 33% share is for the US. But the Nexus numbers from ASUS are global.

Figure Nexus sold another 2 million in nov and december for a total of 5 million and 57% of that is US so about three million Nexus US sales. Amazon at 4X Google would be 12 million installed base. If Google had slightly better sales or a higher US presence that they do internationally (which I doubt) you might have 4 million US Nexuses and 16 million FIRE's.
Hmmm, okay... Maybe.

The methodology seems dubious, though.

I understand that, but the number still seems high to me. They don't say that they have data on all the Android devices out there, and the data on Apple devices doesn't compare to the data on Android devices. If they have data on 25% of the smartphones and tablets out there for example, that would mean that there are 2 billion such devices in the world, which seems high to me.
