Can't erase internal memory. Reader buzzes on startup!
Hello to all eReaders!
I have problem with my PRS-500. I wanted to load very small .lrf to reader (only 96Kb) As usual I started Bookdesigner, created a book, converted to LRF, started Ebook Library, checked the file. It seemed to me all was ok. I connected Reader via usb and discovered that Reader had a very small amount of internal memory - at least 116 KB of free space. I thought that all is ok and loaded created LRF to Reader, then closed a programme and unplugged usb connector. Reader stayed in "usb connected" mode. Damn! I pressed some buttons and nothing hapenned. I tried to reset it using paper clip - it buzzed at "Starting up" window. I connected Reader to usb and ran Ebook Library - Reader status was "Error" and in browser section there were no files. When i tried hard resetting Reader it was still buzzing. I charged Reader with original charger and updated firmware to last update after 10 hard resets. It didn't help. I tried to hard reset my reader when it was connected to charger, and did the same when it was plugged to usb. Still no help. I started it up with usb connected, and the same status displayed when it was loaded. when I started Ebook library the status had changed to "Don't disconnect when files transfering..", when I closed Library the status had cnahged to "usb connected..".Then I unplugged usb and the status was still the same. I don't even know what to do else. Please help me to reanimate my Reader! Best Regards, Brom. Last edited by Brom; 03-30-2009 at 06:05 AM. |

Hi there.
Only thing I can think of is to flash the internal memory and reinstall the firmware using the universal flasher... Good luck. W. |

Hello, wild_Willie2!
I'd like to flash the int. memory but i can't. PRS-500 has no ability to access memory via windows explorer. I've already updated firmware using sony updater. Any ideas? UPD: Before firmware updating procedure I realized that it will erase all data incl. books, Libraries etc. It seems I was wrong of thinking that way. If you can get into the main menu, there is an option to format internal memory on the Reader itself.

One that erases everything and one that doesn't. Maybe one of the Sony owners / specialists will be able to give more precise info on this. |

Hi.
I cant really rember if the flashing will erase the entire internal HD, but I believe that is does not. You normally can't acces the internal memory that contains the operating system of your reader via Windows, so formatting your reader will not help. To be honest I have only flashed the memory of my own 505 reader several times and am a bit uncertain about the procedure on the 500 series but i think that you can flash both the 500/505 series with the same flasher. You can get it HERE Al you need is a SDcard to copy the flashing utility to, then inster that SDcard and folow the instructions given (update firmware) which will REMOVE your current software to leave your reader blank. After this is done attach your reader to a PC and run the sony update utility with the latest firmware. Hope this helps. W. |

I'm sorry but I can't get there. I can see only "Starting up" screen and "USB connected" status if Reader starts with plugged usb cable. PS: are you Igorsk from the-ebook.org forum? You can see a thread there with discussion of my problem: http://www.the-ebook.org/forum/viewt...=230143#230143 Quote:
2wild_Willie2, I am getting my SD card tonight and will carefully read your way of flashing Reader. And if that flasher allows to work with prs-500 I'll use it immediately! Thanks for your help =) Last edited by Brom; 03-30-2009 at 08:41 AM. |
