Gosse, Edmund: Father and Son, v1, 4 March 2010.

Edmund Gosse [1849–1928]
Father and Son: A Study of Two Temperaments [1907]

Gosse was the son of an eminent naturalist, who was a member of the Plymouth Brethren. His father attempted to reconcile the apparent fossil evidence for evolution with that of Biblical Christianity by developing the Omphalos theory. God made creation but made things look as though they had a past. Hence Adam had a navel, even though it was never attached to an umbilical cord. And God planted fossils in rocks.
The books describes how the young Edmund Gosse’s childhood and how he came to reject his father’s beliefs.
There are some wonderful passages, such as the one where the child decides to test the claim that God smites idolators. He worships a wooden chair and discovers that God doesn’t seem bothered.
