Buchclub - Vorgespräch zum Thema "Great Britain" im April 2014

Wir beginnen mit dem Vorgespräch für das Buch, welches wir ab dem 1. April gemeinsam lesen wollen.

Das Thema für das zweite Buch im diesem Jahr ist "Great Britain".

Dieser Thread soll dazu dienen schon ein kleines Vorgespräch vor der Buchclub-Nominierung zu führen und natürlich auch etwas Werbung dafür zu machen.

Der weitere Terminplan:

28.2.-5.3. Vorgespräch der "Great Britain"-Leserunde (6 Tage)
6.-12.3. Nominierung der Bücher (7 Tage)
13.-19.3. Abstimmung (7 Tage) + Stichwahl bei Gleichstand (3 Tage)

Wie beim letzten Mal wäre es interessant zu wissen, wer dabei ist, wo die Interessen liegen, welche Autoren gewünscht sind oder was ihr für Erwartungen habt.

Ich fange da mal mit einem ehemaligen deutschen bzw. besser preußischen Pressekorrespondenten in GB an und werfe den alten Theodor Fontane in den Ring. Er kannte sich bestens aus und lässt uns Reiseberichte und Reportagen zur Auswahl, etwa "Ein Sommer in London" oder "Jenseit des Tweet" (Für die Jüngeren: Gemeint ist der Grenzfluss zu Schottland, nicht die elektronische Meinungsäußerung).

Letzterer Bericht ist schon deshalb lesewürdig, weil die Widmung darin mit der ewigen Wahrheit beginnt:

Also, allgemein gesprochen:

Ein möglicher Blickwinkel auf das Thema GB sind natürlich mehr oder minder literarische Reiseberichte. Die sind natürlich vor allem dann interessant, wenn man mit anderen Reiseberichten oder eigenen Eindrücken Vergleiche anstellen kann.

Ganz andere Richtung: Der englische Kriminalroman. Natürlich tausende Möglichkeiten.

Wie wäre es etwa mit Dorothy Leigh Sayers und einem typischen Lord Peter Wimsey?

Danke schon mal für diese interessante Einleitung!

Auf Theodor Fontane wäre ich jetzt nicht gekommen, Reiseberichte finde ich aber allgemein spannend, hier werde ich erstmal reinschauen müssen.

Beim englischen Kriminalroman bin ich allerdings sofort dabei.

Ich habe mir schon lange überlegt, was wir wählen könnten, was vielleicht eine größere Gruppe anspricht.

Dabei bin ich irgendwie bei Jasper FForde hängengeblieben, dessen Thursday-Next-Romane die Verbindung von Klassikern zur modernen Unterhaltung herstellen.

Der erste Roman dieser Reihe wäre Der Fall Jane Eyre. Ganz ambitionierte Leser könnten dazu dann auch noch den Roman von Charlotte Brontë zeitnah lesen und hier diskutieren.

Ich schaue mir dann die letzte Verfilmung dazu an.

Englischer Kriminalroman klingt schon mal sehr gut. Und Lord Peter Wimsey will ich schon seit langem weiterlesen.

Mir fiel zum Thema Großbritannien vor allem Stephen Fry ein, den ich zwar wegen seiner Harry-Potter-Lesungen ganz besonders schätze, der aber auch selbst ein paar Romane geschrieben hat - selbstverständlich fehlt bei ihm der britische Humor nicht. Speziell würde ich dabei an "Der Lügner" denken.

Was hieltet ihr denn von "Ein gutes Omen" von Terry Pratchett? Hat auch garantiert nichts mit scheibenförmigen Welten oder Schildkröten zu tun

Habe vergessen zu schreiben, dass The Eyre Affair einfach nur genial ist. Leider bin ich nicht belesen genug, um wirklich alle Anspielungen auf Klassiker mitzubekommen.

Terry Pratchett und Neil Gaiman sind mir in jeder Variante recht.

Ich habe auch noch etwas in petto: Troposhäre von Scarlett Thomas. Kennt das jemand?

Zu Pratchett sag ich generell ja, würde aber nach der letzten Erfahrung erstmal die Leseprobe lesen, bevor ich dafür stimme.
