epubs and ogg files

Got a Kindle as a present today which was a nice surprise. Soon found out one downside is the restricted handling of formats: my music is all in ogg format, and I'm working with epubs for my ebooks. I know I can convert everything to mpeg/mobi formats, but I don't see why I should have to go backwards to more closed formats.

So I started looking at jailbreaking: again a nice surprise, now I can ssh in to a nice linux bookreader. But looking round for apps to install I've been a bit baffled: what I've seen so far are fonts and screensavers, plus a stalled attempt to create a full Qt environment. Nothing inbetween. Am I missing something? Has anyone started porting other applications (like music players and epub readers!) over? Is there another forum for this? Or is the environment too specialised for it to be do-able?

It is doable, but unfortunatly not wanted till now.
And some people are afraid of briking thier device too

If you have any motivation maybe we could try a little bit?
Start small and work upstairs because I would love fiddling with the kindles underlying OS/Programs but never had the inspiration todo so.

Whats best?

- try to port existing apps over (maybe commandline to start) - needs a compiler toolchain and low-level knowledge

- or Andrew de Quincy's approach - http://adq.livejournal.com/106967.html - integrate changes in java environment so can avoid need for low-level stuff (but Java :-(

- or try to use existing js epub libraries with webkit (but I read that the browser no longer allows file:// urls)

I would be interested whichever way, but don't have the skills to lead any. Whichever way is least likely to lead to a continuous fight with Amazon updates needing rewrites on each upgrade would be best!

the best way would be to use the kindle-environment, the second best would be to use commandline tools. Its a bit harder with Quincys approach because the KDK isn't available yet, until then we could try that though.

Duokan got released in English: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=105316

It is still beta and no OGG support but ... epubs work now
So that is not bad
Wireless does not work either
But it is still in beta

Resurrected distant memories of java, got eclipse working, helloworld now runs on kindle but sitting in documents directory. Now how to get it into the menu system?

(zerotime: you can see from my speed this is going to be a looong slow process...)

(Rinzwind: looks like duokan might fix my immediate needs but not sure about getting dependent on non-free program developed in language I don't know.. Anyway, it's nice just to play a bit.)
