As I read, it has two modes:
- colour with backlight on, lower resolution because you need rgb-pixels
- monochrome, higher resolution, without backlight, but reflective (I hope I got this right), so sunlight is used to light the display - the brighter the light, the better the view.

There's already evince available on the OLPC. Hope that FBReader will be coming next !

Looks like a great e-book reader: great screen, and it can be used for 24H in reading mode...
