Question Where's the firmware update for the Original Jetbook?

Yo it's January 19th (this originated on the 6th), are you so fixated on the Jetbook lites that you've forgotten about us...your original customers? Ectaco - where are you?

I hear you. I, too, am anxiously waiting for that update.

The Ectaco forum has posted this from their technical support staff:

"Dear Customers

Unfortunately, new Firmware update will be released later than it was supposed to due to technical circumstances.
We will do our best to make updates available as soon as possible."

*Sigh*

It might be that they feel more of an obligation to address their commercial commitments to B&N and eReader, as to the JetBook Lite. They really need to have it
able to properly read the DRM pdb ebooks, with no "lost words". ( I hope that is what
they are doing, as I have a JBL.)

Actually, they would have to be very lame, to not leverage any work done on either
reader to add value to the other, as well. (I'm assuming that they are "greedy capitalists" and not socialist bureaucrats.)

Luck;
Ken

I have compared the core of both units and they run the same linux kernel. So any firmware for one will work on both. I think you are correct Ken they are trying to solve the DRM problem for B&N. BUT, it will only take them a day or so to compile to work on the original jetbook. The only difference is the "lite: does not have the audio built in. The displays and the interface to the user are the same.

Because this is an embedded linux they modules or features are compiled into the system rather than "installed". That is why they do hardware checking to make sure you are not trying to put "lite" firmware on a original unit.

If you have 34c, then I believe you're running newer than the rest of us (the latest 'stable' is .33g, latest 'unstable' is .33h). Hopefully they'll upload the 34c to their servers after CES is over..

I just sent an email to Pavel at ectaco about the .34c firmware, but I don't expect to hear from him until after CES (I'd be surprised if he's not there on the floor). Hopefully we'll get newer firmware for both units shortly after CES is over...

I hope they are "getting er done" sooner than later. I do enjoy my Jetbook HOWEVER there has been an explosion of ebook readers at CES...if you get my drift ...

Yes, there are TONS of new and awesome eBook Readers here at CES.
Most noticeably QUE from Plastic Logic. That thing is more of a PDF tablet with it's touch screens and it's so thin.

Ive looked at ALL ebook readers, and felt them, tested them, and i can tell you, no other ebook readers have blown jetBook out of the water.

jetBook needs to advertise it's ability to turn pages instantly and without back flashing.

People at CES seemed to like this device VERY much. Many people bought them, even I bought one, and I was so set on getting more 'mainstreamed' ones like Kindle 2.

According to tech support, we should have the new Jetbook firmware mentioned above early next week. I'm guessing that their people are at CES manning the booth. They also confirmed that the newest firmware for our non-lite versions had DRM support (but no other details about it).

As for other readers, I'll probably look at larger screen models later this year, I want something to use with PDF magazines and books (I get alot of PDF RPG books, and I'd love to have a digital way to use them when we play, without firing up my laptop). Color would be nice, but definitely not required, but excellent PDF capabilities are a must.
