tablet/ereader for academics

I am looking for a tablet or e-ink ereader that allows me to read PDFs and use stylus to annotate with free-hand writing. I have an ipad but the stylus sounds mushy and doesn't feel like a pen. I want a device with a real pen-like stylus for PDF annotation. Plus the 9.7-in size sounds big for me to carry around. Is there any 7-inch tablet/ereader on the market to serve my purpose? The device is for academic use instead of entertainment (movie, music etc). I hope the price would not exceed $400. Surely a cheaper price would be more desirable. Thank you.

I don't think there's anything that fits all those requirements. I could be wrong.

One word of advice to the OP though: before you rush off and buy one of these babies, I'd advise going into a store and trying to read a full-page PDF on a 7inch screen. I think you'd need REALLY good eyes... or maybe my eyes are just rubbish these days.
