What should I read from MR library?

Have finally gotten around to start looking around the MR library (I know - shame on me. Was using Manybooks exclusively until now.) I was hoping to be able to see what books are popular or something. I just don't know where to begin....any recommendations? I love most genres so hit me with your favourite!

What sort of books do you like? Detective stories? Adventure stories? Romance? SF? It's difficult to give any recommendations without knowing.

There's a ton of noir fiction.

Name some authors and/or genres you like, from the most preferred to least preferred.

A dozen of us (or more) will chime in with our favorite recommendations.

Well, uhm, I like almost everything. Love fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, action, horror, adventure, detective, you name it. Not so big on the romance. I'm interested in almost anything so read non-fiction on a wide range of subjects too So yeah, I'm hard to recommend for I suppose.

Oh! Good idea. As a teen I read several Sherlock Holmes stories and really enjoyed them. Will download that now, thanks for the tip!

While you're at it, download Doyle's "Professor Challenger Omnibus." It has The Lost World stories in it.

Hornung, E.W.: Raffles Omnibus

...from HarryT's Raffles omnibus ....

Quote:
A.J. Raffles is a character created in the 1890s by E. W. Hornung, a brother-in-law to Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes. Raffles is, in many ways, a deliberate inversion of Holmes — he is a "gentleman thief," living in "The Albany", a very upscale address in London, playing cricket for the "Gentlemen of England" and supporting himself by carrying out ingenious burglaries. He is called the "Amateur Cracksman," and often, at first, differentiates between himself and the "professors" — professional criminals from the lower classes.

Jane Austen - romance for those who aren't so big on 'romance'.

I'd recommend my combined volume of Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped and Catriona, which I've entitled David Balfour.

Available in ePub and Mobipocket

I'd also recommend the 7 volumes of R. Austin Freeman's "Dr. Thorndyke" detective stories. Dr. Thorndyke is what we'd call today a "Forensic Scientist" who solves crimes using science.

Alexandre Dumas' - The D'Artagnon Romances Vol 1-4 of which includes The Three Musketeers and ends with The Man in the Iron Mask.

Sir Walter Scott - Ivanhoe and The Talisman

Alexandre Dumas' - "The Count of Monte Cristo" and if you reeeally like it, read "The Son of Monte Cristo" Maybe I'll make my foray into uploading with "Edmond Dantes" (the sequel to "The Count of Monte Cristo") and Dumas's excellent version of "Robin Hood". If you really like Dumas, he wrote a lot of good books, quite of few of which are in the library already. There are better than "Edmond Dantes" though, it's pretty good but not one of his masterpieces.
