Samsung, LiquaVista and Amazon
There's been a lot of press speculation about Samsung wanting to sell their LiquaVista display technology.
There's been so much, I suspect it's true. The big question is: who might be interested in buying it. Amazon is the one all the press are speculating about. I wonder when/if we'll hear what's really going on. |

Electrowetting displays seem to a certain extent to be "a solution in search of a problem". Obviously a company like Amazon could use them to produce, say, a large-format colour magazine reader, but I'm not sure they'd want to: they have the Kindle Fire for that market now.
It'll be interesting to see what does happen. |

Electro-wetting displays seem ideal for an ebook reader. The greyscale version is brighter, better contract, and faster than eInk. The colour versions is brighter, better contrast and faster than colour eInk.
It's really a question of cost, I think. Perhaps Amazon would have the volume to make it worth-while. So long as Amazon continues to use eInk with glass backplanes, there's probably not much to choose between them in terms of fragility of the display. |

The trouble is, though, that the reader market has become very cost-conscious, with users expecting prices to constantly fall. I'm not sure how big a market there'd be for, say, a $300 colour reading device.

The last demo I saw said the resolution was slightly less than 166 dpi. Lower than NST and older Kindles. Hopefully, they found a way to improve that.
