bitbucket or github? Doesn't matter really.

They're both great, and both provide pretty much the same functionality. github might be slightly better simply because they have a larger existing user base, but that's about it IMO.

Both systems allow you to mark the repository as 'private'

Then it is mostly just a backup of your local work in case you "twobob" your local disk drive. [**]

Ah - I think that both systems allow you to "share" access to your private repositories to a small group of people.

IIRC, private repos aren't supported for free accounts on GH.

Thanks for the info.

They are on BitBucket - I have several, in anticipation of shutting down my own HG repo server in the near future.

My vote is with github, reason as said wider userbase support... and as far as I know, wider support in various systems.

Right. There is nothing wrong with absence of private repo support in free account on Github, opensource is cool, but, anyway, Bitbucket FTW!

Well, developers will know about Aeris' project straight from this forum, so wider userbase of Github doesn't matter for awareness. And Bitbucket supports login with Github account, so there will be no need for second account for Github users.

As for various OS support: Bitbucket promotes and develops http://www.sourcetreeapp.com for Win/Mac and some nice person wrote Bitbeaker for Android.

As for Linux, console clients are just what you need (maybe with Emacs/Magit or Vim/Fugitive), right?

One of them (maybe both) uses Amazon S3 for the storage backend.
What better place to put our code than on Amazon's cloud?

Plus, once we start using Amazon's supercomputer to do a security audit of their firmware for them . . . .

Ok, so it seems that github is the most used here, so to be democratic I'll upload the project there! Hope that at least some of the voters (github or bitbucket one) will be in the team!

What GUI do you suggest to use on linux for commits etc. on Github? I don't like command line...

I've found this list:

gitk - graphical history browser, in Tcl/Tk, distributed with Git (usually in gitk package)
git gui - graphical commit tool, in Tcl/Tk, distributed with Git (usually in git-gui package)
QGit - uses Qt toolkit
Giggle - uses GTK+ toolkit
git-cola - uses PyQt4
gitg - GTK+/GNOME clone of GitX
tig - text mode interface for git, is GUI and pager, uses ncurses
GitForce Git tool with Graphical user interface, available under GNU GPL license

I'm currently using GitHub + Sourcetree at work.
But, nonetheless, Komic is still on my hard drive...
Anyway, git rules even if you're developing alone!

Looking good -
Even if just to protect your work from local drive errors.

When using MarkDown for the docs, it is sometimes useful to see how it will render in html before pushing to the repo.

There is a (Lua) script to do just that, which you can find here:
https://bitbucket.org/twobob/kual-sy...DOWN?at=master

I had to hand edit a relatively long 'readme' document from fixed width text to MarkDown for one of my repos -

There where a few differences between the html generated by that script and that generated by the website.
But other than those few 'tweaks' after the first push, the result was very close to what the 'preview' local script generated.
https://bitbucket.org/knc1/kindle-s390-mts

PS: Your Kindle has Lua-5.1 installed, you can use that script on your Kindle.
