PRS-700 crash - suggestions
Hi everyone,
I was at my in-laws demonstrating my PRS-700 to my FIL; Bob was interested in an eReader. Walking back in from the porch, I didn't notice that the sliding glass door was CLOSED, so I smashed myself (and the eReader) against it I was fine, just my forehead a bit sore, but the PRS-700 apparently got flexed in the impact. The screen would not come up normally. It was shifted to the right by about 1.5". I tried re-setting the unit, re-calibrating the screen, restoring defaults, etc to no avail. It syncs well with my PC, powers-up, I can resume reading my current book -except the screeen is offset to the right by 1.5", which makes it unreadable. Has anyone seen this before? I'm contacting Sony support since it may still be in warranty. However, I noticed that PRS-700's are no longer offered for sale. What's up? I haven't kept up since I bought it in November '08. Any suggestions for a different reader just in case? All replies appreciated! Best, Paul |

I'm very sorry to hear about what happened but I'm glad at least you are okay. Sony are coming out with new models and the 700 is discontinued. You might still be able to find it at certain border or sony style stores if they have left over inventory.
Here is the news release for the new readers. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52760 If you enjoy your 700 your best bet would be the 600. It's practically the 700. The key difference I think is that it comes with a built in dictionary but does NOT have a built in light. None of the models have the light so you might need to purchase a cover that comes with a light when and if it's released for these new units. I hope you can get the 700 fixed under warranty. If it's not, search these forums. I believe someone has had the problem you're describing but I'm not sure if they were able to fix it. So was Bob unhappy to find out that they can be so easily damaged? And boy you must have ran into that screen window pretty good. Absorbed in your book? You're probably not interested in the 505 but in case you are considering it and have a Walmart in your area, you might get a great deal on one. However, as the post states, your mile may very as it seems like different walmarts list the 505 at difference prices. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53035 Last edited by MerLock; 08-08-2009 at 03:51 PM. |

Thanks! I missed the press release. I tend to use the built-in light quite a bit, so will hunt for a used one.

Update - Sony expeditiously replaced the PRS700 with a refurbished unit at a handling charge of $29.99. Great experience.
