Just to make sure, is the Kindle lending feature through Amazon (linked by pilotbob, not the KOLL) allowed if all parties are in the correct areas and the books are "lendable" through Amazon?

Just want to make sure before I ever offer it. I don't see this covered in the Guidelines or FAQ.

Well, it takes until chapter 37, about 1/3 of the way through the book, until we get to the main event. The earlier chapters are mainly first person narrative of the character's life up to that point.

The author seems determined to remove any tension or suspense from the book by also giving us glimpses of events later on in the character's life.

I'm carrying on now, as I'm hopeful that the second 2/3s will justify the first 1/3.

Just wait! Right when you think you know what is going to happen, it all changes COMPLETELY! Noble House is even MORE of this, but it's best to read Taipan and King Rat first.

It is a wonderful series - I read it right through, many years ago (at the time of "Shogun" TV mini series, which Wikipedia informs me was 1980). Must re-read it - I still have all the paper books.

The series is a great read for anyone who hasn't read it. It is a great reread for those who have. Shogun grabs you from the beginning. My only complaints with Shogun were minor compared to the story. The book is loosly based on actual events and I wish he had not changed the names. It is similar to reading a historical fiction based on the American Revolutionary War and having the historical character's names changed. George Washing changed to Horace Wallingford for example. If I did not know the history behind the book it would not bother me.

It's fun reading in while sitting over the moat on the grounds of Osaka Castle, looking up from time to time imagining the people moving through the twisting turns of the walkway leading from the big gates (or what remains of the big gates, anyway.)

The entire 9-hour mini-series is available on YouTube. Nice to see it without commercials!

I've never seen the mini-series, but I decided I'd listen to Shogun this go around rather than a reread. David Case narrates. 48-1/2 hours of masterpiece goodness!

I'm reading a book called Habits of the House by Fay Weldon. I saw it on a list of books that supposedly fans of Downton Abbey would like. I love Downton Abbey, but I am so far bored to tears by this book. I am going to give it a bit more time before I give up. I have only liked one book suggested for fans of Downton Abbey so far, and that was Brideshead Revisited. The rest have been disappointing.

Just Finished:

- The Twelve by Justin Cronin - it started slow but got better as it went along. Kinda like the first one.

Currently Reading:

- Joseph Anton by Salman Rushdie (51%)
- O Jerusalem by Laurie R. King (21%)
