Two-tiered voting wouldn't necessarily take twice as long. We could have the initial poll run for 3 days and the run-off for another 3 days. Then the voting would be only one day longer than it is now.

And that's not enough time for people to vote. Let's say the nominations ended on Friday and the vote starts on Saturday. If someone is away for the weekend (including Monday), there's no way to vote in the initial vote. Three days is too easy to miss the vote.

The only way to do this would be to put back the vote so it starts earlier so we get the same time we do now for the initial vote. But then we'd need another few days for the second vote. So if we have six days for the initial vote and three days for the second vote, we'd have to push things back.

The top two books are typically clear within the first 3 days, so there's no need for the initial vote to take longer than that. Even if someone misses the initial vote, that person can still participate in the run-off and vice versa.

Not necessarily in a hidden vote. We can't say for sure how the vote goes.

Tom has seen how the hidden votes have gone, and I think the decision of how two-tiered voting will be implemented if it wins should ultimately be his.

In the interest of time and simplicity, I have decided to vote "No".

Moreover, by clicking on the numbers (ex: the "4" in the votes column for The Scarlet Letter), the screen is replaced by one that tells you who voted for what. That's the "public" aspect of the hidden but public that The Terminator was speaking of. Naturally, who voted for what is a mystery until after the poll closes.
I should add that all our book vote polls are public. We've only had one that wasn't, and that's because of an error on my part when making the poll.

Two tier wins. The voting in 2012 will all be two-tier and every third month will be visible.

OK, who voted and put two-tier on top? It's time for an old-fashioned lynching.

I voted against it too. However, maybe we can have two-tier every over 12 months. So that would be just December. We can also do the open vote the same month and that would be good. The rest would just be hidden one-tier.

I voted against it too. However, I lost, so there's no point arguing on about it or trying to change the way it's done:
