Mike Wallace's "Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898"

There is also Mark Kurlansky's "The Big Oyster: History on the Half Shell" - an food/oyster themed story of New York City's relationship to its environment.

How about "A history of New York" by Diedrich Knickerbocker?

Although fictional, Rutherfurd's New York offers a very poignant overview.

Are you thinking of Washington Irving's A History of New York by Diedrich Knickerbocker. That was a hoax by a fictitious author. Anyway, it was published a couple of hundred year ago. (But it's still worth reading, if you can find it.)

Or is there a more recent book with that name?

I thought the author's name was a hoax but that the book was genuine in it's content. Have never seen a copy of it myself.

You might be right. I remember being told about it in my 12th Grade US Literature class, but that was many many years ago, and I don't remember any details.

If the titile and author are correct, it is indeed a satirical history of New York written by Washington Irving in 1809.
