KF8 is Amazon's answer to ePub. Mobipocket is not cutting it for any sort of advanced formatting and Amazon refuses to go ePub so they can retain full control with DRM.

JSWolf's summed it up fairly well. But it's not just DRM. They also want to add features (or not support certain feature) in their new format without having to go through a standards body.

Otherwise they could have just wrapped a standard ePub in their own non-standard DRMed wrapper.

Thanks to you both.

What Kindle versions read KF8?

I understand that KF8 is based on HTML5 and CSS3. Can one hand craft a KF8 using an HTML editor etc. as one can hand craft an ePub?

Thank you JS and Paul, sounds like a fairly pointless exercise by Amazon to me - but with some pecuniary aim in mind, undoubtedly.

Now I can chuck it into the odd Father - Son conversation, just to unsettle him a bit .....

Kindle Fire, Kindle for Mac/PC and Kindle Touch currently read KF8, I beleive. The Kindle non-touch should get a firmware upgrade to read it at some point, and if we're really lucky, so will the Kindle 3 Keyboard.

Like the earlier Kindle formats, KF8 is wrapped in a Palm database, so it's not possible to hand-craft one without using a compiler, either KindleGen or (the latest) calibre.

Using KindleGen will get you a combined Mobi/KF8 file that can be read by any Kindle. Older Kindles will read the mobi part, newer ones the KF8.

I think I'll stick with calibre.

Indeed it should. Fixed in the original.
