where does my mouse go?

and how do I get it back? my cursor does a lot of jumping about on it's own which is normally not a big deal, but every once in awhile it apparently lands on some combination of keys that must mean "disable the mouse". when this happens I cannot find a blinking cursor, or the little arrow anywhere. my best uneducated fix has been to do the ctrl, alt, delete, pick change users, and then at the name screen my mouse finally rejoins the party. is there an easier fix for this?

You might try either reloading the driver for the brand of mouse you're using, or (I don't know if it's still in Vista) - in XP (somewhere in the control panel) was an app to fix broken drivers.

Sometimes I can't find my blinkin' cursor. Or even my blinkin' keys. Some days I can barely find my blinkin' arse.

Does that help any?

Do you have 'tapping' turned on? That's where you can tap the touchpad to click. If so you might want to try turning it off (so you actually have to hit the button to click) as tapping can do some weird things sometimes. (Especially because sometimes even tapping somewhere off the touchpad ends up being registered somehow.)

Start -> Control Panel -> Mouse -> Device Settings -> Settings -> Tapping -> Uncheck "Enable Tapping"

It takes some getting used to but I find it much more controllable in the end, and you don't have your cursor jumping all over the place when you're trying to type up something.

after control panel I went to systems maintenance, drivers then mouse (the way you put it wasn't an option). I've gone into all of the tabs and that hasn't been an option

actually it was device manager, not systems maintenance

Oh, there's two views of control panel, that's why that part was different.

What brand and model of laptop is it? You may have a different version of Synaptic that puts the setting elsewhere.

Okay, from what I can see on that model you should have an icon that looks like this in your system tray (next to the clock):

Name:	Synaptic.jpg
Views:	254
Size:	5.6 KB
ID:	48281

When you click on it a menu like that one (may not be identical) should pop up. The "Tap to click" option is the one you want to turn off (so it's not checked -- like in the picture). If it's not there try poking through what options you do get.

I did see one or two posts saying the drivers that came with the d630 didn't have the option to disable tapping, so unfortunately it may not be there. You might be able to install other drivers that allow you to if you wish to go to that effort. It seems the drivers for the d430 model have the option and work on the d630.

Here's hoping they've updated the d630 so that the option will be right there for you though. Let me know how that goes. (And thanks for the karma!)

You could try another driver that may work if you want. You just need to know if you're using the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Vista. (If you're not sure, open the start menu, right click on Computer and choose Properties. It will display it on the next screen.)

Driver for XP & Vista 32-bit
Driver for XP x64 & Vista 64-bit

Just note that messing with drivers can cause nasty side effects if something goes wrong, even though these drivers are listed as compatible with the d630 model right on the driver page. Your call.
