POGO Hearts, Spades and More! (5 Card Games for Kindle) by Electronic Arts Inc ($3.99)

Quote:
Product Description
Play 5 popular card games: Hearts, Spades, Euchre, Gin and Canasta.

In Hearts, the object is to win as few points-paying hearts as possible or to win all of the points-paying cards at once. The winner is the one who finishes with the fewest points at the end of the game. In Spades, the object is to bid and win a specific number of hands, by playing the highest card by round or by playing the highest spade. The team that bids and wins the most hands, wins the game. In Euchre, the object is for you and your partner to get as many tricks per round as possible. You get tricks by having the highest trump card or highest suited card if no trump card is played. The team that scores 10 points first wins. The goal of Gin is to make sets of cards, based on runs in suit or matching rank. The player who can make the most matches earliest typically wins. In Canasta, you make sets of up to seven cards. The player who first makes sets of all his cards will make the most points and typically wins.

Learn and master each game through in-depth tutorials with rules and tips on how to improve your play and track your stats across all 5 games.

What game are you going to play first?

Japanese Puzzles Volume 1 (A Puzzle Game for Kindle) by puzzle.tv ($0.99)

Quote:
Product Description
Japanese Puzzles is a collection of 5 different kinds of logic puzzles.

This collection contains 100 logic puzzles: 20 each of Kakuro, Number Islands, Hitori, Picture Cross and Sudoku.

In Kakuro, you insert numbers into a grid of squares so that the sum of the numbers matches the clue for that section without repeating digits. Number Islands is played on a grid of uncolored squares. Each square must be painted black or white according to a set of rules and numeric clues given. Hitori starts with a grid of squares containing numbers. The goal is to black-out some squares so that the remaining cells do not contain duplicate numbers in a given row or column. Picture Cross has an empty grid that must be colored according to numeric clues given for each row and column. In Sudoku, your 9x9 grid of squares starts with a few numbers, and your goal is to fill in the remaining squares such that no numbers are repeated in the same row, column, or box of 3x3 squares.

Instructions and step by step tutorials are included, and hints are available to help you keep going if you get stuck.

If you love number puzzles and are looking for something new, you'll love Japanese Puzzles on Kindle!

You receive a note from your old acquaintance John Croft. You expect nothing but an evening of good food and drink and tall tales. Instead, you quickly find yourself plunged into a conspiracy of black magic that involves some of the most powerful and important men in London - and possibly even someone else, someone much closer to your own heart.

Interact with XVII-century London by typing simple commands like "Go to London Bridge", "Examine the note" or "Ask the bartender about the play". An elaborate hint system reveals as many clues as you desire to solve the story without spoiling the fun.

Lovers of mysteries, horror, adventure games puzzles alike will play the role of the protagonist, experiencing the story from the inside.

FYI, we're trying to keep up with the new releases at this site, http://www.kdlapps.com/, where we're also collecting reviews and trying to group the apps. E.g. we did a recent list of educational apps (http://www.kdlapps.com/all-educational-apps-for-kindle/) and will soon add interactive fiction and productivity apps.

If anyone is interested in writing some guest reviews, we'd be happy to post them and cross-link back for full credit of course (I wish we had a budget to pay writers, but it would be a token amount at best). We'd especially like some comparison articles in categories by enthusiasts. E.g. there must be at least 5 Sudoku apps available now. Which ones are the best and why? Or, which of the two Peg Solitaire games would win if they played against each other?

Has anyone else noticed that the release rate has increased a lot lately, with a lot of new publishers getting their 1st apps released? Interesting times ahead maybe...

Pirate Stash, by Amazon Digital Svcs., a game for Kindle, is free for a limited time (availability is limited to US residents only).

Book Description
Pirate Stash is a logic puzzle game that challenges you to hide all of your treasure chests on a deserted island.

X marks the spot as you push one or more treasure chests to be buried in designated hiding places. Maneuver your loot through a maze of obstacles, but be careful not to make the wrong move. You can only move one chest at a time and the chests cannot be pulled. When the treasure chests are all in place, you have solved the puzzle.

Your score for a puzzle is the number of times each chest is pushed, with a lower number of pushes being better. Achieve up to three stars on a puzzle. Gain one star for solving the puzzle, two stars for matching par for the puzzle, and three stars for a perfect score. Over 100 puzzles of increasing difficulty allow anyone, from beginners to experts, to challenge their minds. Can you beat them all?

If you like puzzle games, you'll love Pirate Stash!

FYI, new app for the Kindle:

Jewels (A Game for Kindle) by Mobigloo ($1.99)

Quote:
Product Description
Jewels is a matching game which will put your planning and pattern recognition skills to the test.

The rules of Jewels are simple: you swap adjacent jewels (horizontally or vertically) to create combinations of three or more jewels of the same type. Once matched, the jewels are removed and the remaining jewels above it slide down to take their place. The challenge comes when there are few potential matches to find, and you must pick your next move carefully or risk eliminating remaining matches when the jewels shift down. If that's not challenge enough, then consider playing the timed mode where you race against a relentlessly decreasing timer and each successful match adds just a bit of time back to the clock.

If you cannot find a match, use the Hint feature to show you the next move. The game keeps track of your ten best scores for both Easy and Timed modes, so you can see just how much the pressure of the timer affects your performance!

If planning and pattern matching appeal to you, then you will love Jewels for Kindle.
