Direct downloads from Amazon in both cases.

So it looks like the iPad mobi support is causing the spidery-thin Helvetica. Might be a bug but I am not sure why it tries Helvetica in the first place. Seems like the AZK is working fine for AZW3 source. You can build AZK files yourself use Kindle Previewer.

I think you're right that it's a bug in iPad support for mobi-source AZKs.

It's trying Helvetica because I'm selecting Helvetica. When I select any other font, the appearance is consistent.

Ah, you're right! I'd never clicked on that option, so was thinking of how it operates in the publishing process, where we download a "mobi" that contains Mobi 7, KF8, and (in my case anyhow) the file that I originally uploaded.

Ha! It was a bug! Amazon just issued an update for Kindle for iPad and Helvetica renders fine now.
