Hi Kovid,

For DRM'd non-dual KF8 ebooks using .azw3 should work just fine. The question I have is what do we call the non-drm, non-dual KF8 ebooks both internal to and generated by Calibre?

One idea is internal to Calibre enumerate the .mobi extension in some fashion:

.mobi6 - means an older mobi file (< 8)
.mobi8 - means a non-dual KF8 mobi (viewable on only newer devices)

And then have a conversion preference that will determine whether people want mobi6, mobi8, or dual versions when converting to .mobi?

Either that of have Calibre only ever produce dual joint mobis when converting other ebooks to be mobi?

calibre is only going to produce joint mobis and they are going to be named .mobi. In the distant future, I might add an option that will cause the .mobi to contain only KF8. Dual .mobi's work well on both old and new Kindles. The only downside is having the compressed text duplicated, that is a price I am more than willing to pay for ease of use.

Hi Kovid, just to clarify for my fuddled brain - when an epub to mobi version will be performed in this (presumably near future) version of calibre, the mobi file will *always* contain KF8 and legacy mobi versions of the book? Are you saying there will be no option for those of us with legacy Kindles who have no interest in KF8 to keep the file sizes down by keeping things as they are now? How much larger are the books, does anyone know?

I haven't kept up to speed with whether Amazon have said they will offer a firmware for Kindle 3/earlier to support KF8. But to me it seems either they will never support it (in which case I would never want my mobi conversions to have the KF8 overhead) or they will support it (in which case rather than having a library of a mix of KF8 and no KF8 books I would likely just reconvert the lot to either use KF8 exclusively or this dual option).

Just my 2p...

There will be an option (probably a tweak - for people that prefer to leave most of their storage bits in an unknown state) to not generate KF8, but there will be no option to not generate MOBI 6. The combined files duplicate only the text, which for a typical book, after compression means an extra hundred odd KB per book).

Is the conversion from ePub to KF8 easier than going to mobi6? I assume with KF8 being based on HTML5 and CCS, we should be able to get a clean conversion from ePub with no loss of formatting, the way we get with conversion to mobi6.

Only time and experience can answer that question. It depends on how badly Amazon screwed up the version of WebKit they use to render HTML.
