Microsoft to halt their digital books project
Not sure if you have seen this on not. Less competition is never a good thing.

That link is one of the most depressing pieces of bs that I have ever come across. I was harbouring the faint hope that MS would stick with the project and use it to generate some badly needed brownie points over the longer term.
Wait... did I really say that? Is there a doctor in the house? |

But as they are making the scans available to their original partners there is great hope for the future and the availability of these texts.

They had the Guy from the Internet Archive, Brewster Kahle on This Week in Tech this week.
It can be found Here He Talked a little about the Project, and while it did sound on some parts as putting a positive spin on things, There were a few interesting nuggets, namely that both Yahoo and Microsoft released all conditions on the work already done, as such the Foundation can do what they want with the work and that they have turned over all the equipment over to the Foundation. That is, a few million dollars worth of equipment. And while the cynic in me might say that they did that because they did not want the further cost of dealing with specialised equipmet that they don't need, the project at least doesn't need to raise even more money to keep it ongoing, as they would have had to do. |
