Science fiction asks trivial questions like "What does it mean to be human?", "What does it mean to be alive?", "What is our place in the universe?", "Why did things turn out as they did, and how might history have turned out in different circumstances?", "In what ways might the future be better or worse than the present?", "What might be the impact of social or technological change?" or "How might a human and alien culture differ, and how might they interact?"
Literature, on the other hand asks such vital questions as "Dare I eat a peach?" |

Solaris in a nutshell is: It's the suffering that shapes and teaches us. Exactly the same most religions say.

To me, Solaris in a nutshell is: We think we're so smart, but we're not, and may never be.

I was only partly joking. Science fiction is widely sneered at, but it can have as much depth and asks questions as profound as anything else.

Some of the technological advances we have now are because of science fiction. Look at cell phones. They came from the Star Trek communicators.

When Get Smart was originally broadcast, the CIA investigated the show. They thought someone in the agency was supplying the show with their ideas.

AFAIR something similar happened to the first author (remember the anecdote; forgot the name) who described a rocket build of detachable fuel tank levels. He got "official visitors" and had a very hard time to explain that he had neither connection with nor, knew nobody involved in the NASA space program.
