From what I read in another thread, the site developers are aware of this. For now, you should still have all your books under the "My Deleted Items" tab. You can either undelete for now or wait for them to fix things.

Since I have multiple backups of all my books I am just leaving them in the trash for now and waiting to see what happens

No. It is not a bug. It is the way it will be and it is the way we will recover purchased books no longer in "I'm Reading".
