Der namenlose Ich-Erzähler hat in einer alten, verfallenen Stadt am Rhein Ligeia kennen- und lieben gelernt. Ligeia wird als kluge, übermäßig gebildete und gleichsam sinnliche wie mysteriöse Frau beschrieben. Der Ich-Erzähler wird zu ihrem Schüler und überlässt sich ihrer Führung durch alle Gebiete des Geistigen. Ligeia ist fasziniert von der Idee, dass alles Leben Wille und der Mensch lediglich aus Willensschwäche sterblich sei.

Der Ich-Erzähler ehelicht Ligeia und lässt sich mit kindlichem Vertrauen von Ihr durch die chaotische Welt der Erforschung des Übersinnlichen leiten.
Doch dann erkrankt Ligeia schwer...


Poe verbindet in dieser 1838 veröffentlichten Erzählung Bacons Empirimus (Bacon wird sogar mehrfach mit seinem Adelstitel Lord Verulam erwähnt) mit dem Übersinnlichen. Ob das Bacon, der allen mysteriösen gestaltenden Kräften wie Platons Weltseele ablehnend gegenüberstand, gefallen hätte?
