William Livingston Alden (1837–1908) was a prominent American journalist, author, humorist, canoe enthusiast, and diplomat.

He was born in Williamstown, Massachusetts on October 9, 1837. He wrote humor pieces and juvenile fiction. He died in 1908.

Excerpt:

The Ghost came up in the wind, and the sails were dropped and furled. "Now," resumed Charley, "I want you to keep cool, and not to let yourselves get frightened. The truth is, boys, that we are out at sea."
"But we can't be," cried Harry. "There isn't any inlet."
