Wal-Mart to Add Nook to Inventory of E-Readers

New York Times article of Oct. 21, 2010:

"Wal-Mart will begin selling the Nook, Barnes & Noble’s dedicated e-reader, in 2,500 of its stores, Barnes & Noble announced on Thursday.

“Sales of Nook devices continue to exceed our expectations, and we are thrilled to be able to partner with Wal-Mart, one of the world’s greatest retailers, to expand the distribution of our award-winning Nook eBook reader,” Chris Peifer, the vice president for digital business development for Barnes & Noble, said in a statement"....

Nice re-written press release for Barnes and Noble. It forgot to mention that Kobo is also going to be at 2,500 US Wal-marts as well.

In my neighborhood, the Walmart patrons aren't readers.

I'm happy to see the devices available there, but I imagine that Target will sell more devices than Walmart will.

Don't count on it. Walmart is a huge retailer because they appeal to a LOT of consumers. They also sell printed books by the boatload. eReaders should do fine in that sales channel. It's good to see Kobo there.

There are also entire countries (believe it or not) where there are no Targets and no real competition for that kind of store. WalMart has sold Kobo for several months in Canada. Perhaps the Canadian numbers entered into the decision to sell it in the US.

I agree with GA Russell - the people that live around me aren't the type to read. These are people that trample each other to death on Black Friday to be first to get a $300 laptop.

I do hope Walmart sells a bunch of them though. The more popular they become, maybe, just maybe, the better ebook prices will become. (I won't hold my breath though)
