Macs and STAReBOOK

Hi all,

Thought it may be of use to someone out there, so I thought I'd report on my use of the STAReBOOK with a mac.

When you connect the unit to a mac via USB you get the SD card mounted as drives. You can copy STK files directly to the SD card this way and open them by browsing the SD card on the unit.

To make use of the eRead software you'll need to run Windows one way or another.

I have a bootcamp partition running windows XPsp2, which I access either booting into windows directly or by running Parallels . Both let me access the STAReBOOK over USB and run the eRead software.

Parallels is the preferred option as I don't need to reboot to use it.

Everything works as it should once the STAReBOOK is detected by windows.

It charges fine by USB no matter what its plugged into .

if you have any more Q's just ask,

Anytime.

The biggest thing to worry about with regard to using it on a mac under parallels is controlling which OS gets your USB devices.

By default I believe parallels takes on USB devices when they are connected so it should just work. However, this does lead to fun with things like digital cameras and mice, they are connected but not visible to the mac until you "disconnect" them within parallels.

Good luck and ask if you need help or have any Q's

@Micro

I set my Parallels VM's to not auto-connect USB devices.

I then use the USB menu in the lower right of a running VM window to pick which USB device(s) to connect. Works like a charm and gives me total control of what is plugged into what.

Just a warning to anyone trying this, certain devices are seen as "composite" devices by the mac, and require the mac composite device driver.

The way that parallels works is by unloading the relevant USB drivers for your device and then "stealing" the USB device for itself. However, composite devices are not able to be unloaded.

The STAReBOOK is not a composite device, but for whatever reason one of my external keyboards is, and give some bizzare error that an application cannot release the USB device. If you do have a composite device loaded, the STAReBOOK will never get released from the mac to parallels, and so keeps erroring until the composite device is physically removed.

Otherwise, all still good on my STAReBOOK front
