Problem downloading upgrades to Calibre
Hi all,
Perhaps there is already a thread on this issue, but I didn't see it. I'm new here so perhaps I've looked in the wrong place. Anyway, I move my ThinkPad back and forth between home and office, although I am working more from home lately. When I try to download the Calibre upgrades at home, they start, go for a while and then stop. I have also tried with SourceForge and that went to "9 seconds remaining" and then stopped cold. It did that several times. I've tried downloading, with the same computer, from my office and it works fine. I'm stumped about the reason for the problem. It only happens with this software. I have downloaded, from home, other "exe" files without a problem. Anyone have a suggestion? This problem doesn't render Calibre useless (thank God! I love the software!) but it is annoying to have to wait, sometimes for a long time (especially when I am out of the country and only working from home). Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks, Tony Geramita |

If you have some kind of antivirus/firewall running, try to disable that temporarily while downloading the update (and only downloading the update). Also, if you're using one, disable your download accelerator/manager.
Is your internet connection stable otherwise? Can you download other files from code.google.com and sourceforge.net (the two official Calibre mirrors)? |

OK, I'll try that. Thanks for the advice and I'll let you know. Strange that I have the same firewalls at work, but ..... no problem.

I just tried what you suggested, turned off the Symantec protection etc. and tried the download. It stopped after about 40%. I was sort of hoping your suggestion would work. (I did reset the protection after, so don't worry about that.) Cheers, Tony |

Hm. What OS and browser are you using? Are you using any browser plugins like Noscript, Adblockers, or the like? Did you try clearing your browser cache before redownloading?

I'm using Windows XP. No browser plugins. I don't know where the browser cache is, so I didn't clear it. I can try looking for that now and trying again. This time with SourceForge.
I'll let you know w3hat happens. Cheers, Tony |

I just tried what you said. I cleared the browser cache and history, shut off the Symantec protection and tried downloading from SourceForge. I got 98% of the file and then it stopped. It was at a speed of 98KB/sec (average) and took a while to get to the place it did. It's what always happens with the SourceForge link: very slow and goes further but doesn't ever finish.
Cheers, Tony |

Does that happen with other files from Sourceforge as well? What about the Google Code mirror (it's the one the standard download link points to)? Can you download other files from the net without problems?

The Google Chrome Interface with the Internet is something that Sourceforge offers to be downloaded. I only mentioned that because it was something that I downloaded, from Sourceforge, with no problem. I tried the two download locations you mentioned. The sourceforge went to 98% and then stopped while the other went to 43% and stopped. It's all a bit weird. (Yes, I did shut off the Anti-virus stuff while I tried these downloads.) Thanks for your help. |
