This isn't readable with Desktop Adobe Digital Editions or with the Desktop Sony Library. So the problem seems to be with Adobe Digital Editions, rather than with Amazon. This is a strange oversight, since almost all 3-rd party PDF readers support passwords. Even some readers without a keyboard support passworded PDFs.

Passwords are not much protection for PDFs. There are "recovery tools" which will find the password for you, and if you already know the password many 3rd party PDF tools will produce a password-free version, see PDF & password. Based on the content, my guess is that putting password free copies on a KDX would be a problem in case the KDX is lost. The password is not much protection, but it is some protection.

Yes, the iRex devices (iLiad, DR1000) do.

And the Hanlin does. You just put the password in a file and it picks it up from there. Once done it is totally transparent.

There's a review of the DX in today's Washington Post here http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...31.html?sub=AR

Your first sentence pretty much says it. What are the alternatives. The iRex iLiad is over $800 w/o wireless if one cares about that. The Plastic Logic Content Director said in May that they don't even plan to have a web browser in the first one, not even an email program for normal email -- just one to accept subscriptions etc. Their focus is No Interruptions. And you know it's going to be expensive. That's geared toward business. A bit larger than the DX.

See http://www.pbs.org/mediashift/2009/0...eaders126.html

The Kindles seem to hold resale value pretty well. The K1 is still going for $275 or so because of that SD slot and a user-replaceable battery.

if you are not European you do not have to pay the 19% tax on the Irex Digital Reader. Since European prices always include tax, you can deduct almost 95 Euros. Which makes it a lot more competitive. So the price is 587.39 Euro - 19% tax = Euro 493.60 = USD 686.-. Estimated shipping costs USD 50.-. So it is not that bad for what is offered.
