Free Book (Kindle/nook) Breakthrough!: How the 10 Greatest Discoveries in Medicine...
Could find this when I did a search...
Breakthrough!: How the 10 Greatest Discoveries in Medicine Saved Millions and Changed Our View of the World Why are you alive right now? Chances are, you owe your life to one of the remarkable medical discoveries in this book. Maybe it was vaccines. Or antibiotics. Or X-rays. Revolutionary medical breakthroughs like these haven’t just changed the way we treat disease, they’ve transformed how we understand ourselves and the world we live in. In Breakthrough!, Jon Queijo tells the hidden stories behind 10 of history’s most amazing medical discoveries. This isn’t dry history: These are life-and-death mysteries uncovered, tales of passionate, often-mocked individuals who stood their ground and were proven right. From germs to genetics, the ancient Hippocrates to the cutting edge, these are stories that have changed the world—and, quite likely, saved your life. http://www.amazon.com/Breakthrough-G...=discounter-20 |

It's a very interesting read. It makes you think how many of us take modern medical treatment for granted and don't even consider how short a time some of those advances have been a part of our daily lives. As an example (I don't know if it's in the book or not) prior to 1921 if you developed sugar diabetes you had a short life expectancy. A scary thought since many of us (myself included) wouldn't be here without insulin shots.

I am looking forward to reading this. I find this sort of thing interesting as well, crich. I have a medical condition that was created my modern science (a drug 'allergy' which came about because they tried to hijack a not really used enzyme in the body in order to break down the drug and then realized that some people had a genetic deficiency of this enzyme which would not have affected their lives in any way unless they were either given this drug or bitten by a certain South American tree frog) and I think that as medicine progresses, we will see more such things. They'll solve one problem but create a while different one! Look at the rise in food allergies. People are being exposed to stuff they never would have been exposed to before and their bodies are over-reacting to it.

I look forward to reading this, too! On this theme I just finished and thoroughly anjoyed another fascinating book, "Germs, Genes, & Civilization: How Epidemics Shaped Who We Are Today", by David P. Clark. I got it as a freebie (in fact, a repeat freebie), so it may come back (it is no longer free at amazon UK nor DE, but there is no price on the US site).
Thank you Koland, Arcdata and Greencat for all this nice finds! |
