eReader 2.1 (iPhone) requires special link format for downloading books

eReader 2.1 has hit the app store, with the return of two features (Manybooks access and load-your-own-books access) that vanished from 2.0.

But the interesting thing is, that Manybooks access is now done by launching Mobile Safari instead of from within the eReader app itself.

And for "other sites," where you used to be able to plug in the direct URL of the book you wanted to download and suck it right down, or browse the web from within eReader to find and download the eReader books, now it launches Mobile Safari to do it.

Thus, you have to replace the "http://" in that URL with the new prefix "ereader://" so that Mobile Safari will know what to do with it – and any websites offering eReader files for download need to use the "ereader://" format for Safari to know it has to be opened with the eReader app.

Apparently browsing the web from within eReader was an Apple no-no, and they had to change the program so that it would call Safari instead. And now everybody offering eReader books for download has to add an extra, non-standard link so that iPhone users can download the app.

I've elaborated on why this is such a bad idea in this TeleRead post.

with Stanza and the Kindle app, I don't think eReader means anything anymore.

Well, to me it still means "the only DRM-crippled format I can download from Fictionwise and be sure of (legally) reading it on every currently-working device I own."

But that's just me.
