Are you referring to the Vote? That is actually a list of books that were nominated but came in second place rather than a list of books that have won the vote.

Books that have been nominated before but didn't win are still eligable for nomination. Any books that have won the vote before are not.

Flatland: a romance of many dimensions by Edwin Abbott

It is an 1884 satirical novella by the English schoolmaster Edwin Abbott Abbott. Writing pseudonymously as "a square", Abbott used the fictional two-dimensional world of Flatland to offer pointed observations on the social hierarchy of Victorian culture. However, the novella's more enduring contribution is its examination of dimensions; in a foreword to one of the many publications of the novella, noted science writer Isaac Asimov described Flatland as "The best introduction one can find into the manner of perceiving dimensions." As such, the novella is still popular amongst mathematics, physics, and computer science students.

Several films have been made from the story, including a feature film in 2007 called Flatland. Other efforts have been short or experimental films, including one narrated by Dudley Moore and a short film with Martin Sheen titled Flatland: The Movie.

P.S. I would like to a category for Pulitzer Prize winning novels. Preferably one month for winners in the public domain and another month for winners not in the public domain. I have noticed that most of the winners so far (with a few exceptions)have been available for free. Not that I can blame anyone but I do think price has a big influence on the winners.

Actually, WE did not agree that it has to be a US public domain book. I know I never agreed. I wanted a modern classic like The Hobbit (for example).

Jon... you never agree with anybody though.

The Hobbit is certainly not out of copyright. It was published in 1966 and renewed in 1994 which means it remains in copyright in the US until 2061.

Rather than argue about if a book is a "modern classic" we are going with the simple definition that I posted in the OP. It makes things a might easier. I'm sure you for one can appreciate clear cut rules.
