Foxe, John: Foxe's Book of Martyrs Vol 1 (Illus). V1. 2 August 2012

Foxe's Book of Martyrs Volume 1 (Illustrated)
by John Fox (1851)

Volume 1 - Books 1 through 4

John Foxe (1516/17 – 18 April 1587) was an English historian and martyrologist, the author of what is popularly known as Foxe's Book of Martyrs (properly The Acts and Monuments), an account of Christian martyrs throughout Western history but emphasizing the sufferings of English Protestants and proto-Protestants from the fourteenth century through the reign of Mary I. Widely owned and read by English Puritans, the book helped mould British popular opinion about the Catholic Church for several centuries. (Wiki)

Acts and Monuments by John Foxe, popularly abridged as Foxe's Book of Martyrs, is a celebrated work of church history and martyrology, first published in English in 1563 by John Day. The book was lavishly produced and illustrated with over sixty distinctive woodcut impressions and was the largest publishing project ever undertaken in England.Their product was a single volume book, a bit over a foot long, two palms-span wide, too deep to lift with only one hand, and weighed about the same as a small infant. Foxe's own title for the first edition (as scripted and spelled), is Actes and Monuments of these Latter and Perillous Days, Touching Matters of the Church. Long titles being conventionally expected, this title continues and claims that the book describes "persecutions and horrible troubles" that had been "wrought and practiced by the Roman Prelates, speciallye in this realm of England and Scotland". Foxe's temporal range was "from the yeare of our Lorde a thousand unto the tyme nowe present" (Wiki)

Notes:
Source PDF files: http://www.exclassics.com/foxe/foxintro.htm

The entire work (>50MB) consists of 12 books plus various notes, addenda and other material. The PDF files from Ex-Classics are separated into 14 volumes which I've take the liberty of adjusting to align more properly with the books. This is the first volume (books 1-4) with future volumes to follow.

This version is taken from the edition by John Cumming, published in 1851, which is a slightly abridged reprint of the 1563 edition with the language and spelling modernised.
