Comparing actual screen real-estate: 9.7" vs. 10.1"
Hi,
I'm interested in comparing the actual screen real estate in some of the popular tablets. I can't seem to get the actual physical height/width dimensions of the display itself from the manufacturer's websites. Apple iPad: http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxytab/ Galaxy Tab 10.1": http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/galaxytab/ According to the physical specs of the devices themselves, the GTab 10.1" seems to be thinner, but that doesn't mean that the display itself is thinner. I'm guessing that pretty much most of you read in portrait mode, and my question is: How well does an A4 page fit on the screen without zooming? Does anyone think that the display ont he 10.1" be thinner? Last edited by Caleb666; 05-28-2011 at 03:51 PM. |

I hope this answers your question. Regards - John I just checked the Galaxy Tab 10.1 specs and the screen is 1280 x 800. Using this aspect ratio (8:5) the numbers are: 8.56" x 5.35" = 45.82 sq in. Last edited by Jabby; 05-28-2011 at 04:24 PM. Reason: oops |

Thanks for the calculations. I didn't think about calculating it like that
So I also looked at the Onyx Boox M90 (http://www.onyx-boox.com/onyx-boox-m90/specifications) and did the numbers: The Onyx Boox M90/M91S is 9.7" with 16:11 aspect ratio (the screen is 1200 x 825) so the screen dimensions are roughly 8" x 5.5" = 44 sq in [20.32cm x 13.97cm]. Edit: Kindle DXG: 9.7" screen with 150:103 aspect ratio (the screen is 1200 x 824) so the screen dimension are 8" x 5.49" = 43.92 sq in [20.32cm x 13.94cm]. Basically the same as the Onyx M90. iPad: 7.76" x 5.82" = 45.16 sq [19.71cm x 14.78cm] Galaxy Tab 10.1: 8.56" x 5.35" = 45.82 sq in. [21.74cm x 13.58cm] Of all the 3 so far, it seems that the iPad is the widest. I wonder how that affects reading in portrait mode? Although the difference between the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and the Kindle DX/Onyx M90 is pretty negligble. Last edited by Caleb666; 05-28-2011 at 05:11 PM. |

The wider screen is closer to the A4 aspect ratio so I would assume you would get a better proportioned page. I have a Transformer which is 16:10. If I read a PDF in portrait mode with US Letter sized pages, I have a fair amount of space at the top and bottom.

or you can go here and plug in the screen size and see a graphical representation of the different screens. Just found it today.
