Kindle needs the new Nook e-ink screen.

I just saw the new Nook. The E-Ink on that is awesome. It was so good that I thought it was fake. It's has far more contrast than my K3. It's the first e-ink device I've seen that wasn't sandpaper for my eyes. Will the K4 have that screen?

Yeah, that 'new' Nook e-ink screen is the same screen Kindle and Sony's been using for awhile.

They all use the same screen. That's not to say there isn't something about the nook, such as the font it uses or the way it renders text, that looks better to your eyes.

Kindle, Sony, Nook, Kobo: they're all using the same screen.

The new nook does have a faster processor which improves the page refresh rate. The new nook can go 5-6 pages before needing a full refresh. I hope the new Kindle does something like that.

It does have a faster processor. However, going 5-6 pages without a full refresh is just a design decision, a feature of the software. The duokan custom firmware for kindle can do this too.

Letting you "flip" the pages by holding down the page button probably does require more processing than the kindle is capable of.

And when the Nook Touch first appeared there were numerous complaints about ghosting, due to the fact that a full refresh was only done one every six (or whatever it is) page turns. B&N quickly released a firmware update allowing the user to select the frequency of the refresh.

I saw the ghosting on my bosses Nook Touch when he first got it. He never was bothered by it, but I would have been fairly irked by it.

Glad that they got it fixed, though.

As far as I know there is still no option to adjust the frequency of the refresh.

There has to be something different. I was at Staples yesterday where they had the Nook side by side with the Kindle 3. The Nook had far more contrast.

That's correct, Harry probably meant Kobo, which added that option in a firmware update.

Thank you for the correction - I did indeed get the two mixed up!

You're not the first to say there's a difference between devices which shouldn't show any, because they have the same Pearl screen. Usually we put that on the font choice and rendering engine, but it seems the Nook Touch has the Caecilia font as well (though I don't think it's exactly the same as the Kindle). Maybe it could come from different quality of batches of eink production, but it's pretty much a mystery to me. Note that mobiletechreview did a 30 minutes Kindle vs Nook Touch video, and that they didn't mentioned any difference in contrast, in fact they liked Kindle's rendering slightly better.
