Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) was a French writer, considered one of the fathers of the modern short story, and it is in this genre where he excels, describing the people and society of his time with an elegant simplicity of style.

"Bel-Ami", published in 1885, was his second novel and it is, as the title of the English translation says, the story of a scoundrel. A poor man unsatisfied with his job decides to push himself into the upper-middle class in Paris by being "friends" with the ladies and getting a job in a newspaper thanks to a friend.
