Warm to hot with tropical storms and a chance of hail. There's a weird-coloured sky, with bushfires burning a fair way away. The air is heavy with smoke and ozone. I'm hiding inside.

Snow. A couple of inches of heavy, wet snow. If we still had leaves in the trees this would be a lot more serious, but it's still lousy for anyone on the roads.

Freshly fallen snow is pretty, but it gets old quick.

Here it's been raining and cold all day. It's finally stopped, and the next couple of days look pretty nice, but the streets will be muddy and slippery in spots for a couple of days. Norton misses our daily walks. It's just not the same to him to watch me peddling my exercise bike while he lays on the floor beside me.

Tom: I once had a housemate that owned an Irish setter. We had set up an exercise bike in the garage for rainy weather ... every time Shannon (the dog) saw one of us hop on the bike, he would run up beside the bike, and the minute we started to peddle, the dog would run ahead full speed .... into the garage door .... over & over & over .... he never could figure out why the bike didn't move ...

Ha! That's what you call a dumb dog! Norton doesn't run, but it took a while for him to realize that under the pedals is probably not the best place to lay while people are exercising.

It rained all day long again today. I let Norton out the front door. He wouldn't think of going in the fenced in part of our back yard in this weather, but he'll go in the front yard. This time, however, he wanted to go for a small walk, so I had to follow him for a couple of blocks while it was sprinkling. He wouldn't think of going out back because he might get wet, but the prospect of being off the leash in the front yard makes him think he's getting a special privilege.

We had an Irish Setter when I was a kid. It was a beautiful dog, but dumber than the proverbial bag of hammers.

Light rain and snow up here. We drove to my folks' place, about 20 miles north. They had more snow and less rain than we did, yesterday, and more of it was sticking around.

Another foot of snow here today. That makes between two and two and a half feet in 48 hours. (Sure hope I can get the snowblower started today!)

The heavy, wet snow we got on Wednesday collapsed into a layer of ice, about an inch thick. I got it broken up and shoveled away today. Temps should be around freezing tomorrow, then up a little higher Sunday, when I'll be driving up to New England. The roads should be fine.

Overcast, and it's just below freeing out there. It might, just might, get just above freezing for a while, before getting cold again, tonight.

That layer of snow and ice outside isn't going anywhere, today.

The weekly arctic vortex cycle is in full swing .... bitter cold for 3 days, then rain, then warming temps, then new cold front ..... repeat .... repeat ... repeat ...

It's just at the freezing point right now, but it's not supposed to get any colder through the night. And the forecast calls for it to get a bit warmer tomorrow, just in time for my long road trip.

At least there's only a 10% chance of rain!

60's F, breezy/gusty, sunny - perfect for attacking the mountains of leafs in the yard.

Has anyone else noticed this? There were NO wolf spiders lurking in the leaf piles. Usually they are swarming this time of year - especially during a warm spell in which leafs have piled up under the trees - and I see them climbing out of the bags. Didn't see one this time. I wonder if last year's hard freezes actually reduced the bug populations enough to affect the spider populations?

Weather was actually very nice for my long drive today. Cool, but above freezing (so no ice on the road), and overcast until sunset (so no need for sunglasses).
