No, it isn't. If you grow up people to be ashamed of looking at other's nude bodies, then those people will be ashamed of their nude bodies themselves. As they are now, if we have to believe the revenues of certain businesses which strive to "improve" said bodies and the social fuzz about certain dietary compulsions, suffered by people who try to "improve" their bodies.

That doesn't make sense. You're speaking of a problem that's due in part because of over-sexualisation of society. You see perfect, beautiful naked or near-naked bodies everywhere, which leads to a skewed perception of what is "normal", which most often than not does not match what you see in your mirror.

This has nothing to do with shame, it's more of a "don't be naked in public" sort of thing. Kind of like "use a knife and fork to eat your food" and "don't fart in the elevator" type rules that lets us live with each other.

Just let the porno-Ulysses get a rating of 18+ in the app store and tha's it. Who's 18? Maybe anyone who has a creditcard.
You are missing the point here. The Ulysses comic in question went to court and was actually found not to be pornographic by nature.
But obviously the iTunes Store rating engine found this not to be up to its high moral standards.
I am following your reasoning here, and to a point I agree. I think there's far too much sexuality commercialised and especially for the consumption of the youngsters. Take for example Bratz dolls etc. I do not allow my 7 year old daughter to play with them and I tried to explain to her why it's not appropriate.
But would I ban selling them? I don't think so. This is what totalitarian regimes do and nothing good comes out of it.
Knee jerk reactions are never a good way of dealing with problems.

Well, Apple let Ulysses back in, and admitted they made a mistake.

I'm sure this will get as much publicity as the initial ban

Two points I would like to make about what's wrong with Apple today:
1. Controlling and censoring app market with a 100% power to decide what's good for us. I am sure they have the best of intentions, but for crying out loud people, have we not learned anything from our history? Censorship leads to totalitarianism - and that can't be good for us!
2. Purposefully designing a product in such way as to make a killing on selling accessories (no USB?).

Anything that Apple does in terms of its appealing hardware and product packaging is for me not sufficient to let the first point there slip by. The accessories business is simply mean (bend over customers!), but that's not as bad.
Are people who do buy into Apple's philosophy stupid? No, of course not!
Are people right to be concerned by what Apple is doing and voice their concerns? Of course they are!
Agreed. But there is a difference between criticizing Apple, the company and their products, and people who use their products. And on Mobileread, I'm assuming that making generalizations about companies and their reading products is fair game, but making generalizations about the people who use the products is off topic and inappropriate.

The "don't be nude in public" taboo is created by a cultural sense of shame in nudity. Therefore, what you said was entirely based in shame, but it is so culturally entranced that you don't even notice it and indeed take it as a given.

I agree, it all seems so reactive-and hard to see how it can be sustainable in the long run.
But, I guess it could be worse-they could ignore trial by media.

It's not sustainable of course. They're bleeding developers each and every single time this kind of story breaks. Oh, there will always be crappy devs, but Apple is losing the good ones, outside the few major corporations they're pandering to. Which defines the future shape of the app store, doesn't it.

Oh boy, this only gets better:

Quote:
With the iPad proving a runaway success, Apple is finding itself increasingly cast as an arbiter of public morals when approving content for iPad and iPhone apps placed in the iTunes store.

The role, however, does not sit well with Apple which three times recently has overturned its ban on content submitted to the store following coverage of its decisions in the broader media.

Yesterday, Apple reversed its decision to ban a depiction of two men kissing in Tom Bouden's graphic novel of Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest. The graphic showed the men's buttocks, but no frontal nudity.
http://www.theaustralian.com.au/aust...-1225880583748

And the closing line in the article just about sums it up for me:

Quote:
Apple again overturned its ban following adverse coverage.

I wonder about this assumption. I read that iPads were selling heavily to middle-aged men with about 100k annual income who already own iPhones. I'm going on my own middle-aged memory, so I might be off. Some forum posters seem to hold this stereotype about Apple products, but iPhones and iPods are owned by plenty of unhip, uncool and older people, from what I've seen.
