BTW, in the E-Mail, it looks like the books will be available directly from the new TOR site, not just through the E-mails. There also looks to be one additional book that is going to be offered on the site (Three Shadows, by Cyril Pedrosa)

They tried to at one point. Tor CEO Tom Doherty cut a deal with old friend and former employee Jim Baen at Baen Books to offer Tor content through Baen's Webscriptions program. It was announced by both companies, but the plug got pulled by Tor's corporate parent, Holtzbrink, over the issue of Webscriptions not using DRM.

Holtzbrink has reportedly changed it's stance on DRM, but meanwhile, it looks like they are trying to formulate an ebook strategy and coherent approach across all of their imprints. Note that Tor sister imprint St. Martin's PRess has been offering free ebooks versions of some mystery series that are trying to promote, and current Tor emails contain the tagline "This e-mail was sent to you by Macmillan, 175 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10010.", another Holtzbrink imprint.

At a guess, Tom Doherty would sell ebooks in a heartbeat, but Holtzbrink won't let him go it alone.

Yet, they don't sell books. There is link to the Tor-Forge books site, which has a shopping cart with the link "Buy Direct From Us" (sic). E-books are not an option.

All this hype, free books, teasers, for nothing. WHAT A MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT.

They were pretty clear from the start that the new site was not going to be for ebook sales.

However, if you look at comment 39 to this post on John Scalzi's site, it looks like (some) Tor ebooks will soon be available once again via Baen.

Not sure if this link is already posted in this thread (I just did a quickie look) but you can download *all* of the free books from one place on their website until July 27 (my B-day BTW). Some new formats have been added as well.

Only if you expected them to sell ebooks in the first place. I didn't. I think Tor parent company Holtzbrink is still deciding how to best do that for all of their imprints.

You can get all of the previously posted wallpapers as well. Fine by me, since I missed one week's - got the books, but not the wallpapers.

I was one of the folks who responded to the first email with a suggestion that they consider supporting other formats, as PDF didn't play well with handheld devices. Shortly thereafter, other formats appeared...
