Sure. Maybe we're all Gullivers, and really tiny Lilliputians live within us. Our bodies are their universes. When we're sick, it's because they're fighting wars or polluting their neighborhood; their Global Warming is our fever, their Ice Age is our chills. Time and space is relative. Maybe each of our cells is a planet, a star, or an asteroid to them and well .... you know where I'm going with this.

- Per this article, http://people.xiph.org/~xiphmont/demo/neil-young.html, a higher sampling rate and greater bitdepth than the CD standard (44.1kHz/16bit) would result in worse sound than the CD standard while resulting increased file sizes.

Based on what I've learned via researching the internet, it seems that the main problem with CD sound quality isn't the CD format itself but the mastering of the recording. No matter the format, if the mastering is bad the resulting recording will sound bad.

Unfortunately, many CD mastering practices have resulted is CDs that don't sound as good as they should. One instance of this is The Loudness War, where the recording is mastered to be uniformly loud throughout the song, which kills the dynamic range of the music.

On YouTube there are several videos concerning The Loudness War and how it's made CDs sound worse. The following video involving a song I know well ("Soldiers" by ABBA) gives an illustration of how The Loudness War affects CD sound quality:
