Covers why does Calibre convert?
Can there please be a way to add in a cover image and/or update the metadata of an ePub without using Modify ePub that doesn't actually convert the ePub? All we have going on now is a conversations to do this that changes things when that is unnecessary.

I think you're looking for this plug-in from kiwidude which generally does the trick:

It's the method I use most frequently for this, anyway.

You can also do a tweak epub and substitute your image's file name for the name of the cover file in the html of the epub...also, you can open it with sigil and make the swap there, similarly. The plug-in method is the non-technical method though.

He clearly knows about the Modify ePub plugin since he mentions it by name.

The odds of a second method being added to calibre's main program that duplicates what is already done in the Modify ePub plugin is very remote. I suppose at some point some of the plugins might be merged into the main program, but putting effort into duplicating what already exists in a plugin...
