What is metadata.opf

Hi, I just upgraded to 0.7.23 and noticed that the converted ebook has now a metadata.opf in each of the ebook folder. Now I assume that this is important since I cannot import any ebooks in aldiko without including the metadata.opf in the import folder of aldiko. Im just wondering because the previous version of calibre Im using .7.17 does not have a metadata.opf. I just put the epub ebook in the aldiko import folder and aldiko would recognize it.

It was introduced a few revisions ago as part of making Calibre more robust after failures. The metadata.opf file just has a copy of the the metadata for the book it is associated with that was previously only held in the Calibre metadata database. It can be used to recover a corrupt Calibre database, and also has the merit that it holds ALL the metadata even if the format in use does not support it so can facilitate transfering books between systems with all the metadta transfered.

I would not have thought that Aldiko will require it?

thanks for your reply, well aldiko would not find any books to import unless the metadata.opf is inside the folder together with the epub file. I guess we'll have to give aldiko team a headsup rgd this matter.

That is strange as an ePub file contains an embedded .opf file. The separate metadata.opf file is a calibre specific feature so Aldiko should not be relying on it's presence.

Perhaps they do because calibre's save-to-disk creates an opf by default? Regardless, seems strange.

However if Aldiko requires an external .opf file that would mean it did not work with purchased DRM free ePub books that have not been put through calibre by the user.?
