Syncing bug in preview window

The preview window is great to check on the fly the results of any modification in the code. However I have seen that after working for a while in a epub the syncing between the book/code view and the preview window is lost.

This happens just in one direction: if I click in any part of the file on the preview window, the book (or the code) view syncs correctly but not the other way round. Whatever is the position of the cursor in the book/code view, the preview window only shows the beginning of the file and do not scrolls down.

Restarting Sigil solves the problem for a while, but it's quite annoying. I haven't identified any particular chain of events that could trigger this misbehaviour; apparently it happens randomly after opening and working in a few of HTML tabs.

My OS is win7 64bit

This also happens if you open an image with and save it in the other application. It works for a while, but it seems to lose the connection and what it displayed is the old image, even though you can click on the file name in the image browser and it is the right size.

This is win7, 64 bit.

@sellew - This doesn't surprise me. I believe I saw this as well when testing, but it was infrequent enough not to risk any more changes after finally getting it working It could be signals getting lost, timing issues of updating the location before the file load is complete. I've made a note to look into it again.

@mrmikel - I've also seen this - where the externally edited image is not updated. You need to close the tab, open the image it its tab, then re-open the html file and it usually displays ok, but not always. Reloading the book will fix it though. Something with the caching of images and timing of signals/updates as well, but not related to the issue above. Annoying any fix that was tried made things even worse if Preview was open. It doesn't help that the timing/signals on Win 7 and Linux seem to be so different. Also on the list.

It is more an annoyance than anything else. That is why I was wanting an image browser you could leave open without jumping away from the document. That way I could verify that the change had been made.

When I work on ocr'ed documents and I am working in code view, the program or individual often leaves images of the text in the document that are gigantic. Sometimes these images have useful pictures. An image browser wouild allow me to look at an image which is merely named in code view and see whether I can just delete it or open it elsewhere to extract the image and trash the rest. I hope I have been a little more clear than I have been before in trying to describe it.

It would be most useful for these ocr'ed documents, since for new ones you know the size and appearance of what you are putting into your document.

All of this wouil be just nice stuff. You guys have created a fantastic tool which makes things so easy and that was pointed out to me when I worked on this document which had taken me weeks before to get into shape by hand, but which I was able to do a few hours with Sigil.

Thank you @meme. The loss of syncing of the preview window, as mrmikel says, is just an annoyance and does not interferes substantially in the workflow. The developers of Sigil are spoiling us with all these new helpful features and, then, the smallest problem we find bothers us

If I observe any pattern in the syncing problem that could help to fix it I will post it.

Doesn't Preview address this issue - showing you the image named in Code View?

FYI - for some reason I suddenly started getting the syncing bug all the time. The good news is that it made it a lot easier to debug, so it should work ok in the next release.

I will have to give it more of a try out. See if I can find a similar document. Now I think about it, it might work.... It may be a matter of identifying which item is being referred to, since they often have this blocks and pictures next to each other.

It looks like the preview window will do what I need. Would it be possible to constrain the images in the preview window to the size of the window, as an option?
I seem to be the only one with this issue, so it is not worth a lot of effort.

I am attaching an epub which illustrates the issue. In the last html file in the book browser at line 149 is one of these gigantic files. Sometimes they contain images which must be extracted, sometimes not.

The attached file is from a very early stage so it has other issues as well, but if the gigantic file could be constrained to the window I would know at once what I wanted to do with it.
Attached Files
File Type: epub ANGELS FROM THE SEAz.epub (7.64 MB, 277 views)

The BOOK is large (Well over 1 M of a large novel). The file SIZES are all nicely sized for a portable reader using ADE

Personally, I find the ridiculously long filenames insane to work with (the names require that the file browser use 30% of the screen space to show.). Besides they have SPACES in them. The current filename conveys no useful information. Bulk rename them!

Sigil will display an image file in a seperate Tab (you probably know that).

Right-click the Image within the book (where it is being used) allows Lots of options. Open in Tab being the way around the preview box size

Developers: Could we have a few simple Image controls here like Rotate Right/left, Flip , and the one I really would like: Wrap in SVG (Like Calibre does with the Cover)

You can see how it finally turned out in the library...the file names became image1, image2.... Not so easy to match with text, but easier to work with.

It shrunk to 3.6 mb. It has a lot of pictures.

Matching with the text is as Simple as a right click. The image name is there.

If you have a terse name, by all mean use that. It was not my intent to obscure the name. It is not necessary to code the title of the book as part of the filename of every image (or HTML file). Sigil edits the works as a SET. Getting disassociated from the parent book is unlikely

The disassociation comes from going back and forth between the original mess and my changed mess and the original pdf...if any. I try to catch missing items on the fly to avoid reading line by line with the pdf as much as possible. In line pictures on two column pages create all sorts of problems for people who don't set up the OCR well or check it when it is done. When the text is from the PDF, it is there mostly for search purposes, not for extraction to create an epub document. So they often don't check it as well.

When I have a missing chunk it is often best to use book view to paste text out of a pdf as when you highlight text in reading mode in a pdf, it maintains the columns. When you switch to text view, it often shows the two columns as one line and you can only select two columns at once. Hooray for book view in this instance.

The reason your image is larger than your window in Preview is because you haven't restricted your image using something like <div><img style="max-width=100%" ... /></div>.

But I can appreciate you don't want to do that for every image, especially inline.

I can understand not wanting to click on the image to display it in a tab, and then use Back to get back to where you are, especially since the tab does not resize the image to fit the window - it keeps its original size.

It should be reasonably straightforward to add the ability to display an image in a window so that the image fits in the window. Possibly using a right-click "View Image" entry or keyboard shortcut in Code View. The window would resize the image just like the Insert Media File dialog does.

Alternatively, the Image tab could resize the image to fit the window. Though this means you won't be able to view the image actual size.

Either way would be great. I can always preview full size in book view.
