Returning an E-book to Amazon

I downloaded one of the freebies that Amazon offered "The Girl on the Beach: A Bess Crawford Mystery" but not being in the US I was charged $3.44 for the download. Uopn receiving it I discovered that it was not a novel by Carles Todd but rather a short story accompanied by three excerpts from other novels by the author.
Hence, I would like to return it, but there seems to be no way of returning purchases like these. If you do that with a newspaper/magazine there is an offer of regretting the purchase and you will not be charged.

It's easy. Use the contact link and sign in. Under the email tab you'll see the choice "Return a book or other content or cancel subscription", select that, complete the form and click "send email". You'll receive an email informing you that the book has been returned and your account will be credited.

You're welcome. The link is on the Kindle Support page. There is a yellow "contact us" link on the right side of the page.

It seems to have worked fine, got a confirmation mail from Amazon. It however states:

"Just so you know, you can return any item purchased from the Kindle Store within seven days of purchase. You can also cancel accidental purchases yourself for a short time after the order is placed. Simply select the "Purchased by Accident? Cancel this Order" option on the order confirmation page displayed on your Kindle."

I have seen this when purchasing magazines, but never when I bought a book. Does the rest of you have this option available after buying a book from Amazon?

Yep. If you buy from the Kindle store on your Kindle you'll see the option on the confirmation page when you buy a book. I have clicked "buy" by accident a time or two so it's come in handy.

If buying a book via computer, I use the method I just showed you. I'm not aware of another way.

BTW, I have returned a Kindle book nearly 30 days after purchase because of formatting issues. I don't think they do this regularly but once in a while it happens.

Thats a great link, duck. Gives FAQ's on all kindle devices plus links to their respective manuals.

Many questions could be answered simply by going there.

It seems like it would be possible to take advantage of the 7-day return policy. Finish reading a book within 7 days and then return it. But I'm guessing they would catch on if you do it often.

I'm sure Amazon have a policy in place for dealing with people who try and take advantage of the returns system - I bet a flag is raised when a certain number appear on the same account and a warning email gets sent.

If you do that often enough and leave a pattern, Amazon will shut down your account.

Yes it is possible to steal and act in an unethical manner.

Amazon is the only store that allows users to return a book that was purchased without any hassle, why would anybody want to abuse the system is beyond me. It affects Amazon, other consumers, and the individual who abuses the system (Amazon has been know to disable accounts with consumers who where abusing the system.)

There's a general belief among DTP publishers that if you return five books you will be shut down. I doubt it's that cut and dried (if I buy a thousand books and return five, I'm sure I'll have more slack than if I buy ten and return half of them).

Returns seem to vary hugely between authors. Mine are about 1 percent. I suspect that many or most of those are accidental purchases. (I once bought a copy of my own book: fat fingers, small iPhone. I returned it.)

Other publishers get close to 50 percent returns. One wonders if there isn't something pretty shabby about their writing / formatting / editing. Either that, or there are genre (college age porn?) that attract people looking for a free ride.
