Have you tried the factory reset? It erases everything from your Kindle. Afterward you would have to redownload all your collections and books. It's usually the last resort.

Can you open DRM-free books, such as the ones in the Mobi section of the "Book Uploads" forum here at MR?

If you've only had your Kindle a little while, then it's certainly no big deal, but those who have had theirs for quite a while may be dismayed to find all of their books gone... not to mention all of their customizations and hacks.

That is the ; "let's just start all over from scratch" option... and not to be taken lightly
Yeah, I wasn't paying attention I thought he said 'Restart', not 'Reset to Factory Defaults'! I am very reluctant to do this and as you say this may be a last resort, but I'm still baffled why I can't open a calibre newsfeed, that's got nothing to do with DRM, all of my books etc are locked down, even those that have never been anywhere near DRM, it's beginning to look like a factory reset may be the only viable option left to me, after a careful back-up I might add. So far I've backed up from the kindle the documents folder, collections.json & reader.pref

Then that would be because you pressed Menu->Settings->Menu->Restart and not Menu->Settings->Menu->Reset like you originally indicated. There's a pretty big difference.

Restart = books and everything still there.
Reset = books, hacks all gone and you must re-download, reinstall everything.

Harry, I'm unable to open anything, every single book on my kindle brings up the same error message including DRM Free, including one that I created from your very helpful guide - Black Heart and white Heart.

That is puzzling, but Amazon changed the way metadata is being used... so perhaps that subsequently broke something within Calibre's newsfeed feature. Have you checked the Calibre forum and bug-tracker website just in case?

EDIT: Actually, you mentioned the Kindle for Android app a while back. To my knowledge, there have been no tools released that will remove the DRM from files downloaded to K4Android... yet. So if that is where all of your files came from, there's no way you'd be able to put them on your Kindle and read them. Or have I misinterpreted?

Harry, I've just downloaded Elder Conkin by Frank Harris from the forum, transferred via Calibre and hey presto the same result i.e.

I haven't, but I will do, although it's beginning to look as though something is broken on my kindle - software wise that is.

OK, I've just seen your edit, I believe that the books in question still have the DRM, and were available a few days ago, they may never have been near the android app, but these form a very small percentage of the total books on the kindle.

I agree. If you can't download a drm-free book and read it on your Kindle, then you have other issues.

Just for kicks, though... eliminate Calibre from the equation entirely. Download a DRM-free mobi and transfer it directly to your Kindle's 'Documents' folder via the USB cable.

Ah, I was assuming that this is what was being done. Yes, if the books are being transferred via Calibre, it's entirely possible that it's the culprit!

You may be right. What version of Kindle's firmware do you have, by chance?

I had to do a factory reset a couple of days ago as I had serious Wifi issues (now fixed) and yes it wipes all content - including music, books from Amazon, newsfeeds and books from non-Amazon sources.

Once it had reset, I got my collections back. It also installed the user guide, a welcome letter and the 2 dictionaries. But that was all.

Not a big issue to me seeing as I don't keep much on the Kindle these days. I tend to download books from the Archived Items or my Dropbox acc as and when I want to read them.

But for anyone else doing this, I'd recommend plugging in your Kindle to your PC and backing up the Kindle Documents folder first and also the music and audible folders if you have anything in those.

I'm the same way. I only ever have a handful of books on mine at any given time. I just know that many like to keep everything they've ever bought and/or read on there.
